The Day Before
Everyone remembers The Day™ or The Day After™, but how many people remember The Day(s) Before™?
You know what I remember? A beautiful Virginia late summer, the smell of autumn in the air, a daily drive to Germantown, MD, taking lunch hours to drive over to Butlers Orchard and gawk at fresh, delicious autumnal produce, and planning our upcoming wedding festivities.
You know… all the silly, stupid, banal stuff we do every day and think nothing of. Life just keeps on keepin’ on and all is pretty good.
6 years later and what have we learned? Demented brain-damaged Nixonian Republicans (I believe they’re called “neo-cons”) have learned the wrong lessons from George Orwell and their own President Nixon. They’ve used a tragedy on a beautiful autumn day to trash civil liberties and that cornerstone of our society, the US Constitution which built on a foundation of civil rights stretching back to 1066 England.
Oh sure, we have plenty to be worried about with disenfranchised, radicalized, unemployed, segregated, impoverished brown people™ living in Europe and Asia…
Would it be unpatriotic or tin-foil hatted of me to say that I’m pretty sure we have more to fear from the aforementioned lunatics running the White House?
I know that this generation will “never forget” 9/11/2001, but it’s a shame we’ve all forgotten what 9/10/2001 was like.
