Originals and Covers (and how to avoid house work)
A few months ago I was driving up north listening to my iPod playlist of my favorite driving songs and realized that we have a lot of cover pieces in our music collection. I made a mental note to create a play list of said covers at some point.
Tonight I should be cleaning… my kitchen is a disaster, there’s sand on the floor from last weekend (still) and yet I finally decided to put this playlist together. In all but one case my rule was that the song couldn’t be a re-mix by the same artist, but had to be a completely different artist.
In some cases, the cover is actually better and in others, it depends on my mood, and some I think are kinda sucky like Video Killed the Radio Star re-done by Presidents of the USA.
We have about 45 songs covered by 2 or more artists, but I’m sure there are more and I either missed them or don’t actually own the original or the cover. For example I know it’s probably incredibly blasphemous, but the Fiona Apple cover of Across the Universe I would like to own, but I have zero desire to own either version of Venus. I have the version of Drift Away done a couple years back, but when I hunted up the original ’70’s version I was not impressed even though I remember liking the original.
Some highlights from the playlist:
Common People – Pulp/William Shatner
Landslide – Fleetwood Mac/Smashing Pumpkins
Always on My Mind – Elvis/Pet Shop Boys
Baby One More Time – Britney Spears/Fountains of Wayne
Come on Eileen – Dexys Midnight Runners/Save Ferris
Proud Mary – CCR/Ike & Tina Turner
Take a Chance on Me – ABBA/Erasure
I’m A Believer – Monkees/Neil Diamond/Smashmouth
Where the Streets Have no Name – U2/Pet Shop Boys
Help from My Friends – Beatles/Joe Cocker
Mack the Knife – Bobby Darren/Robbie Williams
Your Song – Elton John/Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge Soundtrack)
hmm...
I could swear I had that Fiona Apple cover of Across the Universe kicking around somewhere. I’ll have to look. I was just about to go back and work on some playlists for the TiVo. It will not play playlists with 500 songs… it will play playlists of 178 songs, so I have to figure out where the breaking point is.
I like Smells Like Teen Spirit – Tori Amos/Nirvana, which I own as an iTune.
