Help Me, I'm an Addict
Yesterday I went to Farmer’s Market. Just the little one, mind you. It spans a whole city block and has, at most, 30 vendors. They sell flowers, plants, cheese, baked goods, produce, and some meat and eggs.
Last week I bought herbs and spent my Saturday morning planting those in both pots and the garden.
Apparently that wasn’t enough for me. Noooooo.
I realized at the end of Saturday that I still had 2 large faux-terra cotta pots I bought this spring. They are currently living a purposeless existence in my tool shed and it’s a sad, sad situation that needs to be rectified.
I also didn’t feel I had enough herbs and other vegetables for my herb garden and had to buy more.
I bought:
9 flowering plants for my gigantic planter
7 types of peppers: a mix of hot, mild, and sweet.
Mint (can you say Mojitos?)
Cilantro – the broad-leafed kind.
I am debating whether or not to actually rent a rototiller from a nearby shop, till up the second garden, and plant pumpkins and some squash. I find the idea of pumpkins growing in my backyard to be appealing, but it seems like it could be a lot of work and I really ought to do it this weekend or not until next year.

I grew pumpkins once, when we first moved into our house. They were super easy. I just don’t recommend planting both pumpkins and melon – they both take up way too much space!

What would you do with pumpkins? If you just want them for looks, you could look for those mini-pumpkin plants (they’re actually squash). My parents have tried to grow squash, pumpkins, and gourds, and they’re all viny plants that take up a lot of space.
How about rhubarb? It tends to be a low maintenance plant.
