Bezoars
A while ago I mentioned to someone that there were stones that grew in the stomachs of cows that were alleged to have magical/healing properties.
I couldn’t remember what the word was, but I knew I’d read it in a Neil Gaiman Sandman graphic novel. I lacked the patience to re-read the Sandman series to look for one word, so I let it go.
Except I really didn’t let it go. I’d occassionally remember that I’d forgotten and I’d think “I should really look that up.”
Tonight I did. Except I had to find the right key word to get the word — it took me 5 tries to get it right.
The winning combination was “Occult things in animal stomachs”
I do NOT recommend a Google Image Search for bezoar. Especially if you are planning on eating anytime soon, or had recently eaten. Bezoars are formed in the stomach and small intestines. A lot of the pics show oogey things like intestines or stomachs with the bezoar “stones” which are not always stone-like.
Wikipedia tells me that people (used to) believe that drinking a beverage with a bezoar in it was a poison antidote. ugh. seriously ugh.
One minor obsession down, many more to go…
Perhaps I’ll skip the salad recipe I want until thinking of Bezoars doesn’t make me want to gag.
