Summer Storms and Hints of Autumn

The other night we had a huge storm in the area. In some places winds were up to 70mph. I don’t know how strong the winds were in our neighborhood, but they were strong enough to take down a fairly large tree in our back yard. When the tree went down it made a huge CRACK noise that sent us running for the living room Windows to see if our cars had been hit by one of negligent neighbors old, dying trees.
The next morning we found the power lines to our house on our driveway. Our same neighbors’ other old, old tree shed a very large branch onto our garage, which pulled at the power line attached to our house and caused the lines and the PVC pipe they were in to pull away from the house and land on the ground. The wet, wet ground. Miraculously, we still had both power and cable. I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon at home waiting for electricians and MG&E to come fix the mess in my driveway.

I have some pictures to post of this mess – links here will be updated this weekend.

Since we have no A/C on nights when storms like that roll through, we’re forced to close the house and wait for the storms to come and cool the house off. Other nights when storms aren’t rolling through we sleep with most of the windows in the house open and fans in all the windows. Generally, somewhere around 4am the breeze blowing in gets cooler and we have a few hours of not hot, uncomfortable sleeping.
The other night when I woke up at 4am it was about 60 and I needed to grab the quilt. Later, when we were waking up I caught my first whiff of autumn air. You know — that crisp, cool autumn air. Its neither too cold, nor too hot, and not that dewey, humid morning summer air. I know it’s only late-mid July and there ought to be a good 6 weeks before we start seeing a lot of those days, but it felt nice to not be hot and sticky for once.
