Hot cable-pulling action

This morning, Kirstin and I decided that, while the porch in in a half-finished state, we should get the various types of data connections set up while it’s easy to do.

I called our porch contractor and asked him of he’d mind cutting an extra hole in the drywall tomorrow if I could have the wires all pulled this evening.

Later this morning, I sent an email to Luke. Luke lives across the street. Luke has power tools and experience at putting holes in walls, both of which I lack.

This afternoon, I received a response from Luke that he’d help.

This evening, I stopped by the big-box home improvement store, and bought cable and faceplates. Then I came home, changed, and Luke and I (mostly Luke) put holes in my floor and walls, and pulled coax cable, 2 cat-5e, and 2 sets of speaker wire up into the wall between the porch and the house. Once terminated, this will let me have data, phone, cable, and sound from the stereo out on the porch. I don’t know if I’ll use all of this right away, but it’s better to have it there now than to wait and want it later.

Thank you Luke!

Don't Forget nearly burning the house down!

OK, slight hyperbole, but when you take a drill and drill through thick bits of wood, the drill can get hot — maybe even hot enough to make something smolder.
Fortunately, we have squirt bottles to spray water in the warm hole in the house.

what about power cabling?

with all of the cat5e, the speaker, and the coax, don’t forget power plugs! Unless you are trying to go for power over ethernet.

Ahem.

We're not electricians

There are some jobs you leave to the trained people of the world — like plumbing and electrical work. On Tuesday we had a guy out who added power outlets and lighting (outlets? circuits?) for us. The “entertainment” wiring was more of an afterthought. I mean, if you suddenly found your walls open, wouldn’t you want to add in some extra stuff?

Ahem!

While I’ve never been professionally trained…
