Reflections on Moving and Motherhood

Our stuff arrived on Monday afternoon with (so far) everything in one piece EXCEPT for the picture that Mike or RYan or Ryan packed which got broken because of bad packing.
I haven’t actually opened up my glass kitchen boxes, and I’m slightly afraid to and I have to have living room space before I can start on my kitchen. All of this should happen this weekend when we have large blocks of time to unpack, repack and organize. Amy and Luke helpfully came over the other night to take pictures and laugh at our chaos. I’m sure one of them will have pictures of our disaster posted shortly.

Our house in VA is still up for sale (after a WHOLE week). The downside to this is, of course, that it doesn’t even make sense for us to look at houses here since we have no money to buy another one. The upside is that we have a lease through Aug 31st and I’d hate to transfer my mortgage from one place to another with 4 more months.

So I’ve been working at this contract job for a whole 8 days now and while the job is fine and keeps me busy and most of the people are nice, the OVERWHELMING WisKANsin EACCENT is driving me right up a wall. I’d pay $50 for someone in a MD/VA/DC accent to say “Do What?” to me. If I were to write an alphabet for the residents of WI, the SCHWA would become the 27th letter and then you could run find/replace on most of the vowels. The rest of the O’s that haven’t gone “schwa” would go to the 28th letter which would be the Scandinavian OOOOOH — I’d use the lovely O with a slash through it. Don’tchaknooooohw?

And finally, while I’ve never claimed to be running for the mother-of-the-year, I have to say that the new mom in the office with a 4mo. old seems to take her mothering instructions from a mothering book about 25 years old. Give them solid food as soon as you think they can swallow it (instead of delaying it to 6+ months), don’t feed them at night to “schedule them”, and complain when they don’t sleep for 8 hours when they’re only 4 months old.
Yikes.

The Wisconsin accent isn’t THAT bad (or should I say OUR Wisconsin accent…). Give it a few years and you’ll be talking like the rest of us.

It could be worse. You could have moved to the south side of Milwaukee. “Yous guys talk funny dere, aina?”
